Welcome

The Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health and Rights or APCRSHR is a biennial gathering of civil society, young people, academia, government, media, private sector, and development partners from the region concerned about sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) . The first APCRSHR was organized in 2001 in Manila. The succeeding six conferences were held in Bangkok (2003), Kuala Lumpur (2005). Hyderabad (2007), Beijing (2009), Yogyakarta (2011), and Manila (2014). These conferences had varying themes to address SRHR development, issues and actions.

The 8th APCRSHR will examine the responses to the 2014 conference challenges posed to governments, civil society, young people, scholars and researchers, media professionals, development partners and the United Nations System. It will then focus on generating new paradigms and strategies for action across and within countries in the region.

The conference will include several formats, namely: plenary sessions; parallel sessions; satellite sessions and poster presentations.

Welcome Message

H.E.DR.THEIN THEIN HTAY

AND MEMBER, APCRSHR
INTERNATIONAL
STEERING COMMITTEE

Welcome to the Golden Land!

It is indeed a great pleasure to welcome you on behalf of the ISC and on my own behalf, to our momentous occasion of 8th APCRSHR, which will be hosted by MMCWA from February 23rd through 26th, 2016 in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.

It is heartening that the urgency of acting firmly for sexual and reproductive health and rights has been felt by all of us since the very first APCRSHR in 2001. Learning from the series of APCRSHR in Philippine, Thailand, Malaysia, India, China and Indonesia, Myanmar has witnessed that the declarations and specific recommendations for actions too surfaced, coupled with offers of assistance and support. Myanmar will be hosting the forthcoming conference in such an era with mounting global movement towards universal health coverage across all horizons. Way back in the years since the new millennium began with its set goals, it was crystal clear that the progress has been evidenced in many areas. However, the goals dotted as grey areas just happen to be those that are related to equity and equality for women, and that’s MDG 5, reducing maternal mortality and providing universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights.

While taking stock of where we have come across in advancing the global development agenda, and measuring progress on the Millennium Development Goals, we comprehend that specific obstacles continue to mystify our efforts in meeting MDG 5. It underscores that we need to boost the momentum of work and confiscate barriers to sustainable development. Another critical element is comprehensive sexuality education, which empowers young people to make healthy with informed decisions. The reproductive health and fertility decisions of the current generation of youth will determine their prospects as adults, and make sure the right course for a healthy population and economic growth for years to come. I applaud PNGOC and other esteemed organizations for leading the way in highlighting these critical issues in the previous conferences.
The Convenor, Myanmar Maternal & Child Welfare Association, a significant national NGO with treasured historical background and profound performance in helping the lives of women, children and families in Myanmar will be the focal organization to convene the conference in 2016. Especially in the time of remarkable transition of the country towards the modern, developed and disciplined democratic society, we will be trying our best to make the 8th conference a landmark and historical event. Myanmar will be welcoming you and a setting out a defining moment in 2016 at the 8thAPCRSHR.
